AlmaLinux 8 as Desktop: Printing & Sleep/Hibernate

I want to use AlmaLinux 8 for my desktop (laptop - Lenovo T460p). I’ve got everything working except Printing and the Sleep/Hibernate functions.

My printer is a brother MFC-J5930DW network printer which I have wired to my router. It is automatically recognized and configured from Fedora 34 and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I did some minor troubleshooting using CUPS @ localhost:631 and with lpstat, but have no idea why I can’t print from my laptop.

  • print jobs seem to get stuck in the queue “processing” but no printing

  • Here is output from lpstat:
    “[root@niggillc-prod ~]# lpstat -t
    scheduler is running
    system default destination: Brother_MFC-J5930DW
    device for Brother_MFC-J5930DW: dnssd://Brother%20MFC-J5930DW._ipp._tcp.local/?uuid=e3248000-80ce-11db-8000-3c2af445b147
Brother_MFC-J5930DW accepting requests since Fri 25 Jun 2021 05:23:01 PM EDT
printer Brother_MFC-J5930DW is idle. enabled since Fri 25 Jun 2021 05:23:01 PM EDT
    [root@niggillc-prod ~]#”

  • The suspend and hibernate functions on my laptop don’t work. My system gets hung (no response to any keys and blank screen) and has to be rebooted via powercycle.

Appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction with these.

For the printer you might try these instructions about downloading Linux printer drivers from Brother website: https://www.xmodulo.com/install-brother-printer-linux.html. Brother link: https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcj5930dw_us_eu.

The suspend issue sounds like a firmware issue, but I don’t know how to solve that, sorry. Lenovo website shows this laptop certified for Ubuntu only and not RHEL.
