AlmaLinux 8 Live Media beta – now with KDE and XFCE

Hey all! Time flies. Just last week we announced AlmaLinux Live Media beta images available in 2 options: GNOME and GNOME Mini.

Since then, community members have requested other desktop environments as well and so we’ve worked hard over the past few days to build KDE and XFCE Live Media Images and we are happy to announce those today.

You can now grab all of the Live Media images from: https://repo.almalinux.org/almalinux/8/live/x86_64/

Here’s the GitHub repository with build scripts and configuration files: https://github.com/AlmaLinux/sig-livemedia

Our Live Media SIG is really active and awesome. If you’d like to learn more about the Live Media SIG and how to help and contribute, visit the AlmaLinux Wiki: https://wiki.almalinux.org/sigs/LiveMedia.

Hi @jack,

What’s the situation with KDE version/updates in the live iso ?

At the moment in 8.6 the EPEL kde is way out of date (5.23.3) and unsupported.

I don’t see a responsible (updates and security patches) way of having kde as my DE unless I build it myself…

Bob.

That issue you should take to maintainers EPEL.

Yeah, I did a few weeks back via directions here but just tumbleweed since. Although I note they are updating Fedora repos for kde … In any case I’m wondering if Alma are building their own or using EPEL etc in the live iso / are they updating it somewhere.

We use what’s in EPEL. We don’t want to duplicate the efforts of the greater ecosystem and us using their packages shows the maintainers our support of their work.

Jack, Bob’s post was 19 days ago and the problem with KDE in 8.6 was fixed last weekend.

cheers @jack, makes sense… been some news on other threads here and on other forums since which have cleared things up on EPEL KDE: blocked on dependency issues , should be good in 8.7 - it just appeared dead with no activity/responses on bugzilla but that’s been updated since.
