Hello Community! The AlmaLinux OS Foundation is proud to announce general availability of AlmaLinux OS 9.0. AlmaLinux 9 supports the following 4 architectures providing full parity with upstream:

Installation ISOs are nice but AlmaLinux has got you covered for so much more. We have begun updating the following images and those will be available shortly:

Release Notes and More Information

AlmaLinux OS 9.0 is based on upstream kernel version 5.14 and contains enhancements around cloud and container development and improvements to the web console (cockpit). This release also delivers enhancements for security and compliance, including additional security profiles, greatly improved SELinux performance and user authentication logs. Other various updates include Python 3.9, GCC 11 and the latest versions of LLVM, Rust and Go compilers to make modernizing the applications faster and easier.

uhh, no. this is not default. most likely someone installed this: GitHub - MrGlockenspiel/activate-linux: The “Activate Windows” watermark ported to Linux

Very nice, fast release and consistent quality, I’ve deployed 8.6 on several production servers and it works very well, boosting my confidence in almalinux.

thanks everyone who made this release happen!

it should make a great distro even better. i have used the 8.x series for my work workstation with great success.

have a couple of questions/observations:

(1) selinux seems to conflict with tlp for laptops. how can this be overriden?

(2) vmware horizon workstation does not seem to run in rhel9 or clones. i absolutely depend on this for work. any suggestions?

(3) i use overgrive to sync my google drive (overGrive - Fedora Installation Instructions | The Fan Club | dynamic design solutions), with great success. installation fails with alma9 due to missing liappindicator-gtk3. any thoughts about this particular library?

of the 3 issues, (2) is the most significant problem. no help on the vmware website (incidentally, this package is certified only for ubuntu 20.04 and rhel 8.x, which is why i am surprised it does not run in rhel9 - maybe new version is coming soon?)

How long will AlmaLinux support version 9? Will it follow RHEL 9 and end in May 2032?

Alma is community of volunteers (helped by some donations). Not a corporation that can commit to a product that it sells. The community will do its best until it decides to do something else. No more, no less.

But the way it is being marketed I would say otherwise. But lets not get into that.

The need of official statement is if it wants to be something like CentOS it should declare how long it would support certain release. Otherwise the comparison with CentOS doesn’t mean anything.
