RedHat to limit its source repos to CentOS Stream

That sounds bad for all RHEL clones:

Hi there! No need to panic! We are looking into this announcement and the implications for us, both now and long term. We will keep the community updated as we have a clearer understanding of how we can work with Red Hat and our plan moving forward.

I know you are looking into this but isn’t Red Hat required to make source packages available for RHEL as per GPL?

Not publicly - only to their customers

My 2 cents – and you can keep the change:

Maybe a bit off topic:

IBM/RH has a right to do whatever they want with their commercial product - that said, I also think IBM/RH may be experiencing some financial challenges as it has been reported that growth at Red Hat the first quarter of this year was the smallest increase since IBM acquired Red Hat in 2019. IBM/RH also laid-off roughly 700 employees in April.

I think that this was good cover to justify a move that IBM has probably been considering since it acquired Red Hat.

It also brings to mind a situation nearly 20 years ago that lead to a series of legal disputes between SCO Group and Linux and users regarding source code.

I think it’s too early to declare that the sky is falling, the Linux community is very resilient.

It is better to for you and other RHEL downstream Clones to fork the RHEL and make required by clones such a way that the RHEL should follow your model of Open Osurce licensing rather than maintain binary comparability with RHEL, just like Illumos/Openindiana does

RedHat may restrict its portal to its customers, but distributing GPL sources should not be done with restrictions (like no use in a “competive offering”). However, RedHat is composed of multiple RPM, not all of them are GPL.

This is what RL9 provides. I’m not an expert in licensing but I assume that all are redistributable without restriction …

I can’t see what difference it would make – you’d have to explain to me what it is that RedHat does that somehow makes their packages, otherwise identical to everyone else’s, even worth tracking in the first place?
My impression was that RockyLinux and AlmaLinux administrators are fully capable of reading package changelogs and release notes and maintaining a perfectly stable enterprise linux.
In fact, I’d go a step further and say that RedHat totally forcing an end to any and all dependency on their product can only be good for everyone. This is probably going to be the end of them whether or not they did this, it’s just sort of a desperate last-ditch thing.

I think Amazon, Oracle, Alma, Rocky and others should form a Group for Enterprise Linux (GEL) and start proposing and steering, step away from the shadow and snatch some control of the ecosystem from Red Hat.

Amazon is no longer using RHEL for its latest Amazon Linux.
They are using Fedora as the foundation for Amazon Linux 2023.

Oracle probably does Oracle things and has an individual contract with Red Hat that guarantees access to its source code.

So this is more nefarious that I thought, it’s straight to Alma’s and Rocky’s throat.
